Gas line installation and repair for Grand Rapids homes

New gas lines for kitchen ranges, dryers, outdoor grills, garage heaters and generators, sized for the appliance and pressure tested, plus leak repairs on existing piping.

The short answer

Gas line installation in Grand Rapids means sizing the pipe for the new appliance and everything else on the system, running it from the existing piping with a shutoff and sediment trap, and pressure testing before the appliance is connected. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility first; we repair the piping once the utility has made it safe.

Gas where you need it

Why gas piping is sized, not just extended

Every gas appliance in the house draws from the same piping, and the pipe has to deliver enough gas for all of them running at once. Tapping a new range or grill onto a line that is already near its limit can starve the furnace or water heater on a cold morning, so sizing starts with the whole house.

Gas lines often go in alongside our other work, such as a garage heater work, a fireplace insert or a our tankless water heater page, which usually needs a larger line than the tank it replaces.

Pricing, explained

What gas line work costs depends on

Gas line pricing depends on the distance from the existing piping, the size of pipe the appliance needs, and whether the meter can carry the added load. We quote after seeing the route.

  • Run length

Longer runs need more pipe, fittings and support.

  • Pipe size

    High-input appliances need larger pipe.

  • Route

Finished ceilings and outdoor runs take more work.

  • Meter capacity

An undersized meter needs a utility upgrade first.

  • Permit and test

Permit, pressure test and inspection are part of every job.

Both are approved for gas; the route usually decides.

The jobs we do

Gas lines for ranges, dryers and grills

Switching from an electric range or dryer to gas, or adding a natural gas grill on the patio, means a new branch from the house piping. We work out the load of the new appliance against the existing system, choose the route with the fewest fittings, and run black iron or approved flexible gas pipe with a shutoff valve at the appliance. Outdoor runs to a grill are protected and anchored, with a quick-disconnect where the grill needs to move. Everything is pressure tested before the appliance is connected.

Gas leak repair

A gas smell near an appliance, a hissing fitting or a leak found by the utility needs repair before the appliance goes back into service. After the utility has made the situation safe, we locate the leak with a combustible gas detector and leak solution, then remake the joint, replace the fitting or valve, or replace the section of pipe that has corroded. The system is pressure tested after the repair, and every appliance pilot and burner is relit and checked before we leave.

Gas lines for garage heaters and generators

Garage heaters and standby generators both draw large amounts of gas, and both usually sit far from the existing piping. We size the run for the full input of the appliance, including the length of pipe and the number of fittings, and check whether the meter itself can supply the added load. Where the meter is too small, the utility has to upgrade it before the new appliance can run. Generator connections also need a flexible connector and a sediment trap at the unit.

What the visit covers

What every gas line job includes

  • Load check of the whole gas system
  • Pipe sized for the new appliance
  • Shutoff valve at the appliance
  • Sediment trap where required
  • Pressure test before connection
  • Appliance lit and checked
  • Permit and inspection

Local conditions

A gas-heated city

Most Grand Rapids houses already have natural gas for the furnace and water heater, so adding a gas range, dryer or grill usually means extending piping that is already in the basement rather than bringing gas to the house. The catch is age: older homes often have piping sized decades ago for fewer appliances, so we check the existing system before adding anything to it.

From the call to a working system

How a gas line job runs

  1. Check the load

Every appliance on the system is added up against the pipe and meter.

  2. Plan the route

Shortest practical run with the fewest fittings.

  3. Install

Pipe run and supported, shutoff and sediment trap at the appliance.

  4. Pressure test

The new piping is tested before any appliance is connected.

  5. Connect and light

Appliance connected, lit and checked; other appliances rechecked.
