Gas pool heater installation and repair in Grand Rapids
A gas pool heater stretches a short Michigan swimming season on both ends. We size and install it with the right gas line and clearances, and repair heaters that will not fire.
The short answer
Gas pool heater installation in Grand Rapids means sizing the heater to the pool's volume and how quickly you want it warm, running a gas line sized for its high input, setting it on a level pad with the required clearances, and plumbing it into the filter system. Repairs usually involve ignition, pressure switches, sensors or scale in the heat exchanger.
A longer swim season
Why a gas heater suits a Michigan pool
Michigan's swimming season is short, and cool nights in late spring and early fall drop pool temperatures quickly. A gas heater warms the water fast and holds it there regardless of the weather, which is how many pool owners here add weeks to each end of the season.
The gas line is usually the biggest part of the job, since pool heaters draw a lot of gas; see our gas line installation page. Indoor water heating is covered on water heater repair.

Pricing, explained
What pool heater work costs depends on
Pool heater pricing depends on the heater size, the gas line run from the meter, and the plumbing into the pool system. Repairs are priced after diagnosis.
Heater size
Larger pools and faster heating need higher-output heaters.
Gas line
The run from the meter is often the largest variable.
Meter capacity
An undersized meter needs a utility upgrade.
Pad and plumbing
Placement, pad and connection to the filter system.
Repairs
Igniters and sensors are minor; heat exchangers are major.
Choosing between options
Gas heater or heat pump pool heater
Both heat a pool; they suit different owners.
| Gas pool heater | Heat pump pool heater | |
|---|---|---|
| Heating speed | Fast | Slow |
| Cool-weather performance | Works in any weather | Weak in cold air |
| Running cost | Higher | Lower in warm weather |
| Best for | Stretching a short season | Holding temperature in summer |
The jobs we do
Pool heater sizing and installation
Pool heaters are sized by the pool's surface area and volume, how many degrees you want to raise it, and how fast. We set the heater on a level pad at the required distance from windows, doors and property lines, plumb it into the return line after the filter, and connect gas with a shutoff and sediment trap. The gas line is sized for the heater's full input, and we check that the meter can supply it together with the house appliances before anything is ordered.
Pool heater ignition and repair
Pool heaters that will not fire usually have an ignition or sensing problem: a failed igniter or flame sensor, a pressure switch that does not see enough water flow, a tripped high limit, or a control board fault shown as an error code. Low flow from a dirty filter is a surprisingly common cause. We read the code, test the flow and the ignition sequence, and repair the part that failed. Heaters with heavy scale in the heat exchanger may need descaling to run safely.
Spring start-up and fall shutdown
In spring we check the heater for nests, debris and corrosion after the winter, test the gas pressure, the ignition and the safety switches, and fire it with the pump running. In fall, the heater has to be drained and winterized so freezing water does not crack the heat exchanger, which is one of the most common and most expensive pool heater failures in Michigan. We coordinate the timing with your pool opening and closing so the heater is ready when the pool is.
What the visit covers
What every pool heater install includes
- Heater sized to the pool
- Gas line sized for full input
- Meter capacity checked
- Level pad and required clearances
- Plumbing after the filter
- Gas pressure and safety tests at start-up
- Permit and inspection
Local conditions
Short seasons and freezing winters
In Grand Rapids a pool is open for a few months at most, and cool nights at the start and end of the season make unheated water uncomfortable for weeks. Winter is the other half of the story: any water left in a pool heater's heat exchanger freezes and cracks it. Proper fall draining matters as much here as the installation itself.

Questions people ask us
Pool heater questions
It depends on size and output; it is much faster than solar or a heat pump.
Often low water flow, a dirty filter, or an ignition fault.
Yes. Pool heaters have a high gas input.
Yes. Freezing water can crack the heat exchanger.
Gas heats faster; heat pumps cost less to run in warm weather.
Yes, with a propane-configured heater and supply.
Yes, for the gas line and heater.
Call and describe the heater; gas units are most of our pool work.
Want the pool warm by Memorial Day?
Call and we will plan a heater for it.
