Whole-house air purifiers and UV lights for Grand Rapids homes
Equipment that cleans the air your furnace and AC already move through every room: UV lights at the coil, electronic air cleaners and high-capacity media filters.
The short answer
Air purifier and UV light installation in Grand Rapids adds cleaning equipment to your furnace and ductwork. A UV lamp at the AC coil keeps it free of mold and bacterial growth, an electronic air cleaner captures fine particles, and a media filter cabinet catches far more dust than a flat filter. Each mounts in one visit.
Clean air through the ducts
Which air cleaner fixes which problem
Whole-house air cleaning works on air the blower is already moving, so it treats every room without a box in each one. The key is matching equipment to the complaint: musty smells from the vents point to the coil, dust and allergies point to filtration.
Most homes get the biggest single improvement from a media filter upgrade. UV and electronic cleaners are added where a specific problem calls for them.

Pricing, explained
What an air cleaner install costs depends on
Pricing depends on the type of equipment and how the furnace and ducts are laid out. We quote after seeing the plenum and return.
Equipment type
UV lamps cost least; electronic air cleaners cost most.
Duct space
Cabinets need straight return duct next to the furnace.
Electrical
UV lamps and electronic cleaners need a power connection.
Ongoing parts
UV lamps and media filters are replaced on a schedule.
Combined work
Pairing with a tune-up or new furnace saves a separate visit.
Choosing between options
UV, electronic or media: side by side
Each type solves a different problem.
| UV coil light | Electronic cleaner | Media filter | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Keep the coil clean | Capture fine particles | Capture dust and allergens |
| Upkeep | Lamp yearly | Wash cells | Filter 6 to 12 months |
| Airflow effect | None | Very low | Low |
| Best for | Musty AC smells | Smoke and fine dust | Most households |

What you can maintain yourself
Owners can keep most of this equipment running. Installation and electrical work are a different matter.
| Safe for a homeowner | Leave it to a technician | |
|---|---|---|
| Media filter | Swap the filter on schedule | Fitting and sealing the cabinet |
| Electronic cells | Wash the collector cells | Diagnosing a cleaner that has stopped |
| UV lamp | Note the replacement date | Replacing lamps inside a live plenum |
| Musty smell | Check the filter and drain line | Cleaning the coil and drain pan |
The three types we install
UV lights at the coil
The indoor AC coil stays wet all summer, and in a dark cabinet that invites mold and bacterial film. A UV-C lamp mounted in the plenum shines on the coil continuously and keeps that growth down. The benefit shows up as fewer musty smells when the AC starts and a cleaner coil that moves air better. Lamps lose output over time and are replaced on a schedule, usually yearly. UV at the coil treats the coil; it does not clean the air in the rooms.

Electronic air cleaners
An electronic air cleaner charges particles as they pass through and collects them on plates or a charged media. It captures very fine particles, including smoke and some allergens, with little airflow restriction. Collector cells need washing every few months, and some older designs produce small amounts of ozone, which is why we steer toward current low-ozone models. For households dealing with wildfire smoke days, a smoker in the house or heavy seasonal allergies, this is the practical step above a media filter.
Media filter cabinets
A media filter cabinet holds a four or five inch pleated filter in place of the one-inch filter at the furnace. The deeper filter has far more surface area, so it catches more fine dust and lasts six months to a year instead of one or two. It also restricts airflow less than a high-rated one-inch filter, which matters for furnace and AC performance. We fit the cabinet between the return duct and the furnace, sealing the joints so air cannot bypass the filter.
Local conditions
Closed-up winters in Grand Rapids
Grand Rapids winters are long, cold and mostly cloudy, and houses stay closed from late fall into spring with the furnace recirculating the same indoor air for months. Dust, pet dander and cooking particles build up rather than airing out, which is why air-cleaning calls pick up around the first hard freeze. In summer the pattern flips, and a damp AC coil becomes the thing worth treating.

Questions people ask us
Air purifier and UV questions
Mostly it keeps the coil clean. Room air is handled better by filtration.
Usually once a year, as their output drops over time.
Some older designs do. We install current low-ozone models.
It depends on the system. A deep media filter gets high capture without choking airflow.
Better filtration reduces airborne allergens; it does not replace medical advice.
It needs a hole in the plenum and a power connection. We recommend a technician.
Yes. They mount on the air handler or furnace the same way.
Typically every six months to a year, more often with pets.
