Pilot will not stay lit
Thermocouple or pilot problem.
Wall furnaces heat cottages, small homes, cabins and additions without ductwork. When one will not light, or smells wrong, it needs a proper repair and a venting check.
The short answer
Gas wall furnace repair in Grand Rapids covers the through-the-wall and recessed gas heaters found in cottages, small older homes, apartments and additions. Most failures are a pilot or igniter, a thermocouple or flame sensor, a gas valve or a blocked vent, and every repair ends with a carbon monoxide and venting check because these heaters sit in the living space.
What you might notice
Thermocouple or pilot problem.
Dirty burner or combustion issue.
Venting or combustion problem; call now.
Leave and call 911 first.
Delayed ignition from a dirty burner.
Heat without ducts
A wall furnace heats the room it is in and the spaces around it, with no ductwork, which is why it suits cottages, cabins, small homes and additions. Direct-vent models draw combustion air from outside through the wall and vent back out, while older gravity models vent through a flue and need closer attention to draft.
Where a home needs heat and cooling room by room, a ductless system is the usual alternative. Larger homes with ducts are covered under furnace repair in Grand Rapids.

What we fix
When a wall furnace will not light or keeps going out, the cause is usually the pilot assembly, a weak thermocouple or thermopile, a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter or a gas valve that has stopped opening. Dust and lint collect in these heaters quickly because they sit at floor level in the living space, so we clean the burner and the combustion chamber, test the ignition sequence and replace the failed part. The heater is run through several cycles before we leave.
A wall furnace burns gas in the same room people sleep and live in, so venting has to be right. On direct-vent units we check the outside terminal for snow, nests and damage and make sure the seals are tight. On gravity units we test draft at the flue and check the vent pipe and roof cap. Every visit includes a carbon monoxide reading at the heater and in the room, and we check that a working CO alarm is close by.
When a wall furnace is old, cracked or no longer has parts available, we replace it with a modern direct-vent unit sized to the space, which seals combustion away from the room and is far more efficient than an old gravity heater. We match the wall opening where possible, run the vent through the outside wall and connect gas with a shutoff. If the home would be better served by a heat pump or ductless system, we price that as well so you can compare.

Local conditions
Around the lakeshore, cottages and seasonal rentals are a big share of the housing; in Van Buren County, home to South Haven, tourism is a major industry and the county had 75,587 residents in 2020. Many of those cottages, and small older homes and additions inland, heat with a single wall furnace, which is why careful repair and venting checks on these heaters are a regular part of our work.
Choosing between options
Both heat a room; one is far safer and more efficient.
| Gravity wall furnace | Direct-vent wall furnace | |
|---|---|---|
| Combustion air | From the room | From outside |
| Venting | Flue or chimney | Through the wall |
| Efficiency | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Existing installs in good shape | Replacements and new installs |
Pricing, explained
Repairs are priced after diagnosis. Replacement depends on the unit size, the venting and the wall opening.
A pilot or valve versus a new heater.
Direct-vent terminal or gravity flue work.
Sized to the space being heated.
Matching the existing opening keeps it simpler.
New shutoff or line work where needed.
